By Christy Orr, Communications Director | Valour Community Centre
There is something special about a community centre, it's more than a building, a gymnasium or a place to register for programs. It's where neighbours become friends, and people come together to make their community a better place.
At Valour Community Centre, we're fortunate to have not one, but three incredible sites: Clifton, Isaac Brock and Orioles. Each has its own history, personality and place in the neighbourhood, but all three sites share something important: the people who bring them to life.
And those people have some wonderful stories to tell.
So Much Happening at Valour!
One of my favourite parts of working in communications for Valour is getting to see just how much is happening across our sites.
From Forks & Flicks bringing families together over food and movies, to Engineering for Kids inspiring young minds through hands-on experiments and discovery, there is always something happening.
Our youth drop-in programs give young people a place to connect, create and belong. The Orioles Bike Cage helps make cycling more accessible while teaching valuable repair skills and encouraging sustainability. Programs like yoga, Zumba and badminton bring people together through movement, recreation and fun.
We're also expanding opportunities for learning, with financial literacy workshops that help residents build practical skills and confidence.
Then there are the family events, community celebrations, volunteer initiatives and countless activities that don't always make the headlines but make a difference in people's lives.
And this is only a glimpse of everything happening across Valour.
The People Behind the Programs
None of this would be possible without the incredible people behind the scenes.
Our staff, program instructors, volunteers, and board members give so much more than just their time. They bring ideas, skills, patience, creativity and a genuine commitment to the neighbourhoods we serve.
To everyone who contributes to Valour, in ways big and small THANK YOU Your efforts are noticed, appreciated and worth celebrating. Watch for recognition and highlights in upcoming issues!
Introducing Our Community Newsletter
With so much happening, we wanted to create a better way to share it all. So The Valour Voice was born. Our first ever digital community newsletter, bringing together updates, events, program highlights and stories from across Clifton, Isaac Brock and Orioles.
But I don't want this to be just another newsletter filled with announcements and registration links. I want it to reflect the people who make up our community.
I want to celebrate our history, recognize our volunteers, showcase local talent, share neighbourhood accomplishments and create a space where residents can contribute their own voices.
And that's where you come in!
We Want to Hear From You!
Have a story to tell? A favourite memory of growing up in the West End? A poem you've written, a family recipe worth sharing or some exciting neighbourhood news?
We'd love to hear from you!
We're welcoming community contributions, including:
Stories and memories: Share your experiences, neighbourhood history or favourite Valour moments.
Poems and creative writing: Show off your imagination and creativity.
Community news: Tell us about local achievements, neighbourhood initiatives and upcoming events.
Recipes: Share a family favourite or something delicious from your kitchen.
Artwork, photography and comics: Help us showcase the creativity in our community.
Volunteer and community spotlights: Nominate someone who deserves a little recognition.
You don't have to be a professional writer, artist or photographer. All ages and experience levels are welcome. If it matters to you and your community, we'd love to hear about it.
We're also planning to include a little fun along the way, with games, contests and surprises in future editions.
Let's Tell Our Community's Story Together
Valour has been part of Winnipeg's West End for generations. Our buildings have hosted countless games, celebrations, friendships and milestones, and there are still so many stories waiting to be told.
As Communications Director, my goal is to help those stories reach beyond our walls, connect neighbours and remind people of everything their community has to offer.
I hope you'll follow along, get involved and maybe even share a story of your own.
Because Valour's story isn't just about our programs or our buildings.
It's about you.
